As the game begins, you are immediately tossed into a tale of political strife, betrayal and war on a grand scale beyond your scope in the early stages. As the game wears on, the plot will twist, turn and develop in numerous ways that expose the personalities of each of the characters involved.

Final Fantasy Anthology combines two titles from the Final Fantasy series and offers PlayStation owners a glimpse into the past. Huge worlds, in-depth storylines, and innovative battle and magic systems, and an incredible cast of characters all make for a deep gaming experience.
The inclusion of Final Fantasy V marks the first time this title has appeared on a console in North America. Both games in this compilation feature never-before-seen CG movies, adding to the appeal of these classics.
Jarrett and Labonte Stock Car Racing is a solid racing game that's great fun for anyone who really enjoys spending a great deal of time learning all the ins and outs of a totally in-depth racing game. The soundtrack rivals Wipeout XL for the title of best licensed soundtrack ever. Player expectations had changed by the late Nineties though, so Namco shifted its approach to the series to match.
Where the original was a loud, colorful game that you played for a good time, not a long time, Ridge Racer Type 4 offered a relaxing contrast with pastel-colored skies and a more relaxed soundtrack. The excellent drift-heavy racing remained though, and the game had some fun stories, plus more cars and tracks to play with than any of its predecessors. This one dispenses with the high budget 3D spectacle and sci-fi leanings of mainline PlayStation counterparts like Final Fantasy VII and VIII, instead offering up more complex battles featuring 2D characters on isometric 3D stages, with job classes that call back to the more traditional fantasy roots of the series.
As well as these more complex and expansive arenas, the second game in the series introduced some iconic vehicles such as Axel and Mr Slam, as well as a co-op mode that allowed players to tackle the tournament together. The only downside was missing out on the endings, which could only be viewed by solo combatants — they remain memorably, deliciously evil today.
This PlayStation version is an excellent likeness for the arcade classic, but what really puts it over the top is the inclusion of a totally original second scenario set in a hotel, which is exclusive to this version. It justifies the purchase of a G-Con gun by itself. Reflections might have accidentally created one of the hardest tutorial stages ever, but getting past it was well worth it.
Inspired by the great car chase movies of the Seventies, Driver gives you plenty of different driving missions to take on as an undercover cop, from getaways to tailing other cars. As you explore Dracula's gigantic castle, you'll fight a huge variety of enemies, gain experience to increase your stats, equip lots of weapons and increase your health by toppling the game's tough bosses.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night didn't exactly invent the Metroidvania genre, but it's arguably the apotheosis of the style. You never know what you'll find next, whether it's a save point, a new area, a secret room or a grotesque monster. Furthermore, each new ability you gain lets you unearth just a little more of the map, whether it's a double-jump or transforming into a wolf. There's also a heartfelt story about Alucard's twisted relationship with his father.
While Symphony of the Night eventually came to other platforms, it all started on PlayStation. While an E-rated game, Ratchet and Clank mixes a lighthearted colorful aesthetic with some more mature elements, making it fun for kids or adults.
But the gameplay is really what helped the series stand out and get numerous sequels plus a divisive reboot on PS4. Every part of the game is intensely likable and has aged excellently, making it an obvious entry for this list.
A lot of people debated as to why Uncharted 4 is up here instead of Uncharted 2, and what I can say is that, while I love Uncharted 2, Uncharted 4 is better. The deep emotional narrative that we loved in The Last of Us can be seen trickling into this game, as it was directed by the very same person, Neil Druckmann.
Uncharted 4 is also arguably the best third-person shooter of all time. It's camera and reticle movement is the smoothest I've ever seen in a video game. Now combine that with simple but cinematic melee combat as well as smooth parkour and a sweet grappling hook — damn, this game was so much fun. The mechanics translated to multiplayer so well that I wish other games would just even attempt to be as good as this. And the way Uncharted 4 wraps up the series is one of the most well-written endings I've ever had the pleasure to witness.
The Devil May Cry series gave us the most stylish hack-and-slash games to ever exist. Devil May Cry 3 is the most significant and the best among them because it not only revamped the gameplay entirely but also gave us more of an emotional narrative and birthed the cocky Dante character that we know and love today.
This game was the first to introduce fighting styles, like Swordmaster and Gunslinger, which let you use a variety of badass new tricks and combos. DMC3 was also the first to take a deep dive into Vergil's character, who's Dante's brother and the main antagonist of this game. Dante plays the comedic cocky type for a good portion of this game, but damn does it send you on a rollercoaster of emotions toward the end. The game is called Devil May Cry for a reason after all. Post-apocalyptic worlds can often be grey and familiar sci-fi fare.
But Guerilla Games made a totally unique one — filled with tribes of humans living in the shadow of mechanical monsters, all living in an open-world with diverse environments and a touching story of the outcast Aloy finding her place in this world of dangerous technology and unfriendly humans. The standout element of Horizon Zero Dawn are these robot enemies, built to resemble familiar creatures from nature.
Even fighting mid-sized ones is an interesting challenge, each featuring different weak spots and elemental strengths. Said distractions are incredibly accomplished, too — side quests, mini-games, hunting, and gathering are all deeply considered parts of Red Dead 2 in their own right. Red Dead Redemption 2 is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Lost Legacy moved the spotlight to the unexpected duo of treasure hunter Chloe Frazer and mercenary Nadine Ross, and discovered there is a verve and chemistry in the cast even without Nate. Not only does Lost Legacy open the door for any number of spinoffs that focus on other characters in the Uncharted universe, it features some of the best gameplay sequences the series has to offer.
An exceptional third-person shooter with a trippy supernatural twist, Control is not only our Game of the Year for but stands out as one of the most unique adventures of the generation. On top of its excellent super-powered gunplay, Control features some truly inspired environmental design, its Oldest House a shape-shifting labyrinth-like something from a fever dream shared by Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch.
Throughout its monster-filled halls, you'll undertake memorable side quests, hunt for upgrades to your abilities and gear, and hunt down a litany of collectibles that all help flesh out the eerie bureaucracy that's at the center of Control's impossibly unique experience.
Remedy, meanwhile, is working on several new projects, including a Control multiplayer game, the long-awaited Alan Wake 2 , and a free-to-play co-op shooter codenamed Vanguard.
Candyman 's Tony Todd, who will voice Venom, says the sequel is " massive ," while Insomniac's Bill Rosemann called it " darker " than the studio's two previous Spidey games. Horizon: Zero Dawn is one of the most beautiful open-world games ever crafted. Grass sways in the wind beneath blooming sunrises while towering cities formed from the ashes of a once prosperous society loom in the distance. And, most importantly, giant, awe-inspiring mechanical dinosaurs outfitted with a terrifying array of pseudo-natural weaponry roam the land, roaring, gnashing, and trampling their prey.
When iconic PlayStation developer Guerrilla Games revealed they were pivoting away from the Killzone franchise to make an open world robot dinosaur hunting game starring a warrior redhead outfitted like a space cake dealer at Burning Man, the world was cautiously optimistic. The end result, thankfully, was a vast, wondrous, and unique open-world action game with just the right amount of RPG elements that come together to create a brilliant first entry into what we hope will become a pillar franchise for PlayStation Studios.
Taking down a gigantic boss with an active strategy of well-placed melee strikes and projectiles is one of the most thrilling experiences on PlayStation 4, and looting the shrapnel of a downed robot for much-needed upgrade parts afterwards is equally satisfying.
Horizon takes some of the best elements of existing open world games and weaves them together to make something wholly original, wonderfully refreshing and wildly fun. The latest Horizon Forbidden West trailer introduced us to the game's factions. What is surprising, perhaps, is just how much of an upgrade it got in the process. Seriously, is there any other game where you can play the stock market, jump in a Mad Max death card and then trip on peyote so hard you turn into a bird?
Dre composed new music for the game and will be featured as a character. Persona 5 does a great job of balancing the two facets of its gameplay, letting players really dive into the social connections in the real world and allowing those to influence the dungeon exploration and turn-based action of its massive and varied mind palaces. Coupled with a continually engaging combat system, a soundtrack full of earworms, its twisty, wild story, and plenty of additional content on top of the base game, Persona 5 Royal delivers one of the deepest JRPGs of the generation, if not of all time.
CD Projekt Red's sprawling fantasy epic has become one of the most noteworthy games of all time, one that set a new standard for open-world RPGs.
With a grim-yet-gorgeous world that stretches across the better part of an entire continent, every corner, cave, swamp or city street of The Witcher 3 has something to discover. It's a game where you can easily get lost for hundreds of hours and still not see everything it has to offer — but every one of those hours will be absolutely worth it. Netflix's The Witcher: Season 2 is now streaming. IGN's review of the first six episodes said the series "continues to be a light and entertaining adventure in its second season, despite some lingering pacing issues.
Bloodborne is a brutally difficult, immensely terrifying action horror game that will immediately kick your ass.
